How to play Six Plus Hold'em
Six-Plus Hold' em, or Short Deck, takes the game of poker to a new level by reducing the deck, which creates a more dynamic and strategic environment. With fewer cards in play, the probability of obtaining winning hands increases, making each game an adrenaline-packed experience full of surprises.
Aim of the game
The aim of the game is to create the best five-card hand and make bets that gather the highest number of chips possible. The bets are added together in a pot, which is won by the player with the best hand. It’s also possible to win if the rest of the players choose to pull out.
Deck of cards
A reduced deck of 36 cards is used, removing the 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Number of players
Two to ten players are seated at the gaming table.
Distribution of cards
Each player receives two starting cards. These are combined with the five community cards which the dealer reveals at different phases of the game: Flop (the first three), Turn (the fourth) and River (the fifth).
Betting structures
Six Plus Hold'em follows a “button blind” structure, where each player contributes an ante and only the player in the button position must place the blind. This means that, unlike the traditional format which includes a small blind and a big blind, here, there is only one blind per hand. A dealer button is used to show which player holds this position.
During the following betting phases, players can choose to check, call, raise or fold.
Pre-flop
The hand starts with the player to the left of the blind. A betting round continues until each player has either folded, placed all his chips or matched the amount wagered by all other players.
Flop
Once the first betting round is over, the three community cards known as the flop are displayed and are available to all players. The action starts with the player to the left of the button and proceeds with a new round of betting.
Turn
After the round of flop bets, the fourth community card, known as the turn, is revealed. Again, the action starts with the first player to the left of the button.
River
When the turn betting round is over, the river is revealed, which is the fifth and final community card. This betting round also starts with the player to the left of the button.
Showdown
If one player bets and all other players fold, then the remaining player takes the pot and is not obliged to show his hole cards. However, if two or more players remain after the last betting round, a showdown occurs. The one who made the last bet or raise is the first to show his cards. If there were no bets in the final round, the player to the left of the button will be the first to show his cards. The player with the best five-card combination wins the pot. If several players have the same hand, the pot is split evenly between them.
Order of the cards
The value of the cards, from highest to lowest, is as follows:
A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6
Value of hands
In this variant, the flush is considered stronger than the full house, which is a significant difference in the hierarchy of hands compared to traditional Texas Hold'em.
The hands are described below in ascending order of value:
- High Card: The highest single card if no other combination is formed.
- One Pair: Two cards of the same value.
- Two Pair: Two different pairs.
- Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same value.
- Straight:Five cards in sequence (The Ace can represent either the low or high end of a straight. For example, the combination A-6-7-8-9 is classified as a straight, since in this case the Ace is considered a 5).
- Full House: Three cards of the same value and a pair.
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit.
- Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same value.
- Straight Flush: Five cards of the same suit in a sequence.
- Royal Flush: The highest sequence of the same suit, A-K-Q-J-10.
