How to play Uno
Uno is an American card game developed in 1971, which stands out for its simplicity and entertainment. This game is perfect to play with family or friends, as its rules are easy to learn and a match is fast and dynamic.
Aim of the game
The objective of Uno is to get rid of all your hand cards, and it is crucial to click on the "Uno" button once you have only one card left.
To win the game you need to score a certain number of points. The winning player is scoring points at the end of each round for the cards still held by the other players. The required total score depends on the number of players:
- 100 points in games with 2 players
- 200 points in games with 3 or 4 players
Number of players
This game is designed for 2 to 4 players.
Deck of cards
The Uno deck has 108 cards. The distribution is as follows:
- 25 cards in each of the four colour suits (red, yellow, green, blue). Each colour suit includes:
- One zero.
- Two cards for each number from 1 to 9.
- Two cards of each of the action cards: "Skip”, "Draw Two“, and ”Reverse".
- Four "Wild" cards.
- Four "Wild Draw Four" cards.
Action and Wild cards have the following effects:
- Skip: Skips the next player's turn what means they cannot play any card until their next turn.
- Reverse: Reverses the playing direction.
- Draw Two: Forces the next player to draw two cards.
- Wild: Allows to change the colour to be matched.
- Wild Draw Four: Allows to change the colour to be matched and forces the next player to draw 4 cards.
Game preparation
The cards are shuffled and 7 cards are dealt to each player. The remaining cards are placed in the centre, face down, forming a deck. The top card is flipped over and set aside to begin the discard pile.
Playing the game
On a player's turn they have to play one card matching the discard in colour, number, or symbol, or play a Wild or Wild Draw Four card as long as you meet the requirements to do so.
If you have no card that you could play, you need to draw the top card of the deck and, if possible, play it immediately; otherwise, the turn passes to the next player.
A player who plays their penultimate card must click on the "Uno" button. The winner of the round is the first player to get rid of all their hand cards.
Scoring
The player who manages to get rid of all their cards scores points for the cards still held by the opponents:
- Number cards -> Face value
- Draw Two -> 20 points
- Reverse -> 20 points
- Skip -> 20 points
- Wild Draw Four -> 50 points
- Wild -> 50 points
Rules
- When a player draws a card from the deck, they must choose whether to play that card immediately or keep it. No cards already in their hand may be played on that turn.
- “Wild” may be played on any turn, even if the player holding it has cards that will match the current colour, number, and/or symbol.
- "Wild Draw Four" can only be played if the player holding it has no cards matching the current colour. They may have cards of a different colour matching the current number/symbol or a Wild card and still play the "Wild Draw Four".
- A player using "Wild Draw Four" or "Wild" must declare the new matching colour before ending their turn. They can also choose to keep the current colour if they prefer it.
- If the draw deck runs out during play, the top discard is set aside and the rest of the pile is shuffled to create a new deck. The game continues then normally.
- It is forbidden to exchange cards of any kind with other players.
- A player who plays their penultimate card must click on the "Uno" button as a warning to the other players.
Penalties
- If a player does not click on the "Uno" button while playing their penultimate card, before the next player takes their turn, they will be punished with two additional cards. If they do click on time, no penalty applies.
Fun, excitement and unexpected twists await you in every game. Are you ready to win UNO?
